St George's Cancer Care Nelson
St George’s Cancer Care is establishing a specialist oncology and haematology clinic in Nelson, providing local access to cancer care for people across Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough. The clinic will offer medical oncology and haematology services in a calm, purpose-designed environment, supported by St George’s wider clinical team in Christchurch.
The Nelson clinic will provide medical oncology and haematology services locally, reducing the need for many patients to travel to Christchurch for consultations and treatment. Care will be delivered by experienced clinicians, supported by St George’s wider multidisciplinary cancer team in Christchurch to maintain continuity and specialist oversight where required.
Care closer to home
The Nelson clinic is designed to support patients to receive appropriate specialist cancer care closer to home, reducing travel, disruption and time away from family and support networks.
Care will be delivered by Nelson-based medical oncologists, with strong clinical links to St George’s Christchurch specialists. This model supports local care where appropriate, while maintaining access to specialist input for more complex cases.

Haematology
The clinic provides specialist haematology care for people with blood-related cancers and conditions, delivered locally where appropriate and supported by St George’s multidisciplinary cancer team.
Chemotherapy and immunotherapy
Chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments are delivered locally in a calm, purpose-designed clinical environment.Receiving treatment closer to home can help reduce travel fatigue and disruption, while maintaining high clinical standards and safety.
Scalp cooling
Scalp cooling is available for eligible patients receiving chemotherapy treatment. This technology can help reduce hair loss during treatment and supports dignity and wellbeing for some patients.Suitability for scalp cooling will be discussed as part of individual treatment planning.
Supportive care
Cancer care is about more than treatment alone.Patients attending the Nelson clinic can access funded supportive care services through the St George’s Cancer Institute charitable trust. These services may include counselling and psychology, nutrition support, physiotherapy and exercise programmes.Supportive care is designed to help patients manage the physical and emotional impacts of cancer treatment and recovery.
