Iain graduated in medicine from the University of Otago in 1989, and completed his medical oncology training in 1998. He finished his radiation oncology training in Melbourne in 2001, and then spent two years sub-specialising in cancers of the head and neck, gastrointestinal cancers and sarcomas at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Canada.

He returned to New Zealand in 2003 and, in addition to treating cancers, he is a member of various medical organisations including the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR). Iain is currently Co-chair of the Asia-Pacific Special Interest Group of RANZCR.
