Assoc Prof Chris Atkinson
Radiation Oncologist and Director

Oncologists are responsible for defining an appropriate care plan for each patient. They manage radiation treatment, symptom control and psychological support,  and co-coordinate other components of care such as surgery or chemotherapy.

Chris has been a Cancer Specialist for 30 years and has held management and governance roles at Canterbury DHB, the Cancer Society of New Zealand and the Royal Australasian College of Radiologists. He helped evolve the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (a clinical trials research group) and Psycho-Oncology New Zealand from their beginnings. In addition to establishing the St George’s Cancer Care Centre, he currently chairs Cancer Control New Zealand. “I love working at St George’s Cancer Care Centre because it truly is patient/family focused and our team comes to work and leaves with a smile”. We have state of the art facilities and equipment but the “Care” after “St George’s Cancer”, really means something.
